Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Order length = exposed edge length × allowance factor. Trim pieces = round up (order length ÷ stock-piece length). Fittings are added from the entered corner and end counts.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each project section separately and keep every input in one unit system.
  2. 2Enter the verified values for exposed edge runs, corners and stock length.
  3. 3Review the raw measured result before applying waste, overlap, labor or price assumptions.
  4. 4Apply one documented allowance, then divide by the exact package yield or stock length and round up only at the purchasing stage.

Worked numerical example

A shower with 22 linear feet of exposed tile edge using 8 ft trim lengths needs three lengths before cuts and corner pieces.

Purchasing and rounding

Measure exposed tile edges that actually need a trim profile and separate them by profile depth, finish and location. Divide each group by usable trim length and round to whole pieces; count factory corner pieces separately when the system uses them.

Interpret the result

The result is linear trim requirement for exposed edges, not tile perimeter generally. Internal corners, movement joints and transitions may use different profiles, so combining every edge into one stock count can produce the wrong material.
