A tile budget has at least three different quantities: field tile area, extra tile needed for cuts/pattern/breakage, and linear trim for exposed edges or transitions. Keeping those quantities separate prevents a common mistake—using one blanket waste percentage to hide every layout decision.

Worked project example
A 10 ft × 12 ft bathroom floor has 120 ft² of net tile area. With a straight layout and 10% cutting/breakage allowance, plan 132 ft². If the selected tile is packed 15 ft² per carton, buy 9 cartons for 135 ft².
