Methodology
How the tile estimate works
The project area is increased by the selected pattern allowance. Tiles are calculated from individual dimensions, while purchasing quantity is rounded to complete boxes. Grout uses tile size, joint width and depth; thinset uses the coverage printed on the mortar bag.
Measure
Measure every tiled section and subtract permanent openings that will not receive tile.
Choose the pattern
Diagonal and herringbone layouts create more offcuts than a straight grid.

Confirm tile coverage, grout yield, trowel size and mortar coverage on the exact products.

Tile and grout questions
How much extra tile should I buy?+
Ten percent is common for a straight grid. Diagonal installations often need about fifteen percent, while herringbone, mixed sizes and irregular rooms may need twenty percent or more.
Why does joint size change grout quantity?+
Wider and deeper joints contain more grout. Smaller tiles also create more total joint length across the same floor area.
Why can thinset coverage vary so much?+
Coverage depends on trowel notch, substrate flatness, tile size, back-buttering and mortar consistency. The product bag and tile manufacturer instructions are the final references.
Should I keep spare tiles?+
Yes. Spare tiles from the same production lot are valuable for future repairs because color, caliber and surface variation can change between batches.
