Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Adjusted coverage = tile area × waste factor × back-buttering factor. Bags = round up (adjusted coverage ÷ product coverage per bag).

This calculator estimates tile adhesive or mortar bags from installed area, coverage per bag and an allowance for substrate variation. It is intended to compare package quantities, not to select a mortar type or trowel notch.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure the actual bonded tile area.
- 2Add an allowance for uneven surfaces, back-buttering and handling loss.
- 3Enter the published bag coverage for the chosen trowel and tile.
- 4Round the quotient upward to a full bag count.
Worked numerical example
A 300 ft² installation with 10% allowance creates 330 ft² of planned coverage. If the selected mortar covers 55 ft² per bag under the chosen trowel, order 6 full bags.
Purchasing and rounding
Mortar is purchased by whole bag. Coverage printed on the bag is conditional; larger notches, back-buttering and substrate correction usually reduce real coverage.
Interpret the result
The result is a material-order scenario. If the calculated bag count seems low, verify that the coverage input is for the selected trowel and not a best-case maximum.
