Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Columns = round up ((room length + joint) ÷ (tile length + joint)). Rows use the same method. Tile order applies the waste allowance and boxes round up.

Worked numerical example

A 10 ft × 8 ft floor using 12 in tiles with 1/8 in joints produces about 9 full modules across the 10 ft direction; centering the remainder avoids a narrow cut at one wall.

Purchasing and rounding

Use the layout result to dry-plan full tiles and edge cuts before ordering. Purchase tile from total net area plus a waste allowance appropriate to the pattern and room geometry; layout calculations determine cut positions, while cartons must be rounded separately using the exact coverage per box.

Interpret the result

The row and column result describes module placement using tile size plus joint width. It is primarily a layout check: centered borders, movement joints, pattern repeats and out-of-square walls can change cut sizes without changing the room's nominal area.

Why can layout tiles exceed area-based tiles?+

Rows and columns include edge cuts, while pure area assumes offcuts can always be reused perfectly.

Does grout-joint width change the number of tiles?+

It can change the number of rows or columns when the room dimension is close to a full repeated module.

Does this support diagonal or herringbone layouts?+

No. Those patterns usually need more waste and a project-specific layout.
