Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Daily grains = household water use × effective hardness. Cycle capacity = daily grains × regeneration days × reserve factor. Nominal units are rounded up by entered unit capacity.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate softener grain capacity from household water use, effective hardness, regeneration interval and reserve, with a separate nominal-unit and salt-use scenario.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Estimate daily household water use from occupants and per-person demand.
  2. 2Adjust effective hardness using the entered iron correction only when applicable.
  3. 3Multiply daily gallons by effective hardness for grains per day.
  4. 4Multiply by regeneration days and reserve factor, then compare with usable manufacturer capacity.

Worked numerical example

Four people using 75 gal/day each at 15 grains/gal hardness plus 1 mg/L iron with a 5-grain iron factor create 6,000 grains/day of effective load. Over seven days with 20% reserve, the required cycle capacity is about 50,400 grains.

Purchasing and rounding

Do not select a softener from nominal “32,000 grain” labeling alone. Manufacturer salt dose, usable capacity, service flow, resin volume and local water chemistry determine real performance.

Interpret the result

Required cycle grains are a treatment load between regenerations. The rounded nominal-unit count is only a comparison against the entered capacity and does not design controls or plumbing.
