Inside area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Volume = inside area × pipe length × quantity. Fill time = volume ÷ fill flow.

Calculate the internal fluid volume of circular pipe from actual inside diameter, length and quantity, with fill time, water weight and filling cost.
Calculation steps
- 1Use actual inside diameter, not nominal pipe size.
- 2Calculate circular cross-sectional area from the inside radius.
- 3Multiply area by pipe length and number of identical runs.
- 4Convert volume to gallons/litres and divide by fill flow for ideal fill time.
Worked numerical example
A 100 ft run of 3 in inside-diameter pipe contains about 36.7 gallons. At a 10 gpm fill rate, the ideal fill time is about 3.7 minutes before accounting for trapped air or system restrictions.
Purchasing and rounding
Use manufacturer dimensional tables to get actual bore for the selected material, schedule or SDR. This calculator determines contained volume; it does not select pipe size or fittings.
Interpret the result
Contained volume changes with diameter squared, so a small bore change can materially change stored water and fill time.
