Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Occupancy volume = occupants × daily flow × retention days. Bedroom allowance is calculated separately. The larger value receives reserve, then rounds up to an available tank increment.

Use this calculator to compare household occupancy or design flow with an editable septic-tank sizing rule. It is suitable for early planning only because approved tank capacity is controlled by local regulation, system type and site design.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Enter the household or bedroom basis used by the selected rule.
  2. 2Apply the editable base capacity and incremental allowance.
  3. 3Add any project-specific reserve factor.
  4. 4Round up to an available approved tank size.

Worked numerical example

If a planning rule calls for 1,000 gallons for a three-bedroom home plus 250 gallons for each additional bedroom, a five-bedroom scenario produces 1,500 gallons before selecting the next available approved tank size.

Purchasing and rounding

Septic tanks are supplied in discrete approved capacities. Select the next compliant size above the calculated planning value and include risers, inlet/outlet fittings and effluent components separately.

Interpret the result

The result is a comparison against the entered rule, not a permit determination. Soil evaluation and drain-field design remain separate.

No. Tank and drain-field design requires site evaluation, soil data, permits and local regulatory criteria.

Does a larger tank fix an undersized drain field?+

No. Tank capacity and soil-treatment capacity are different parts of the system.
