Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Design flow = occupants × flow per person. Absorption area = design flow ÷ approved soil loading rate. Trench length = absorption area ÷ effective trench width.

Use this calculator only for preliminary drain-field area scenarios from entered design flow and soil loading rate. Approved sizing, layout, setbacks and reserve area must follow local health authority requirements and site evaluation.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Obtain the approved design flow.
  2. 2Use the site-specific soil or percolation-based loading rate.
  3. 3Divide flow by loading rate.
  4. 4Lay out trench bottom area and reserve area under local rules.

Worked numerical example

A design flow of 450 gallons per day divided by an entered loading rate of 0.6 gal/day·ft² yields 750 ft² of infiltrative area before trench geometry and reserve requirements.

Purchasing and rounding

The output is not a material order. Pipe, chambers, aggregate, fabric and distribution components depend on the approved system design.

Interpret the result

Lower-permeability soil usually requires more infiltrative area. The calculator cannot decide whether the site is suitable for a conventional system.
