Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Order length = pipe run length × allowance. Sections = round up (order length ÷ stock section length). Outside surface area uses the pipe diameter plus twice the insulation thickness.

Calculation steps

Worked numerical example

Two hundred feet of 1 in outside-diameter pipe has about 52.4 ft² of bare cylindrical surface. Package ordering is usually by linear feet, so divide the run by the exact section length and add fittings.

Purchasing and rounding

Match insulation thickness, temperature rating, vapor barrier and jacket to the service—not only pipe size.

Interpret the result

The result is a takeoff; heat-loss, condensation and code requirements need separate evaluation.
