Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Order length = pipe run length × allowance. Sections = round up (order length ÷ stock section length). Outside surface area uses the pipe diameter plus twice the insulation thickness.

Worked numerical example
Two hundred feet of 1 in outside-diameter pipe has about 52.4 ft² of bare cylindrical surface. Package ordering is usually by linear feet, so divide the run by the exact section length and add fittings.
