Whole-home insulation planning should be divided by assembly: attic, above-grade walls, rim joists, floors over unconditioned space, crawl spaces, ducts and pipes. Each location has different moisture, air-sealing and product constraints.

Worked example

A home may have 1,400 ft² of attic floor, 2,100 ft² of net exterior wall and 280 ft² of rim-joist area. These numbers cannot be combined into one package count because attic loose-fill, wall batts and rigid rim-joist insulation use different coverage charts and target R-values.
