Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net area = wall area + selected ceiling area − openings. Order area = net area × waste factor. Packages = round up (order area ÷ package coverage).

Use this calculator to estimate insulation coverage and package count after separating wall area, selected ceiling area and openings. The quantity result is useful for ordering, but insulation type and R-value must be chosen for the actual assembly, cavity depth, climate and moisture strategy.
Calculation steps
- 1Calculate gross wall area from perimeter × height.
- 2Add only the ceiling area that will actually receive insulation.
- 3Subtract doors and windows, then apply the editable cutting allowance.
- 4Divide by the exact package coverage and round up.
Worked numerical example
For a 15 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls, 51 ft² of doors and windows, the full wall area is 432 ft². Adding the 180 ft² ceiling gives 612 ft²; subtracting openings leaves 561 ft². With 10% allowance, the order area is 617.1 ft², or 16 packages at 40 ft² each.
Purchasing and rounding
Packages are purchased as whole units. Match package coverage to the exact product width, thickness and piece count; do not use coverage from a different R-value or batt size.
Interpret the result
The package count is a quantity estimate. The approximate bay count helps compare batt packages, but corners, doubled studs, headers and nonstandard spacing change the actual piece layout.
