Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base heating capacity uses area × entered load rate. Ceiling, insulation and climate factors adjust the load. Input power = thermal capacity ÷ COP or efficiency factor.

Use the Home Heating Cost Calculator to estimate a planning quantity from verified seasonal heat demand, system efficiency and energy price. It supports scope comparison, purchasing and operating-cost planning, but it does not select equipment, approve code compliance or replace project-specific design.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure or obtain each design input from the actual project and keep one consistent unit system.
  2. 2Enter seasonal heat demand, system efficiency and energy price using product data or approved design information rather than generic nominal values.
  3. 3Review the unrounded engineering or usage result before applying allowances, duty cycle, efficiency or tariff assumptions.
  4. 4Apply each adjustment once, then round only the final purchasing, equipment-count or scheduling output.

Worked numerical example

A seasonal useful-heat demand of 12,000 kWh served at 85% efficiency requires about 14,118 kWh of fuel input before multiplying by the chosen energy price.

Purchasing and rounding

Compare fuels only after converting prices to a common energy unit and applying system efficiency. Include delivery or fixed charges only when they differ between alternatives.

Interpret the result

The result estimates seasonal energy cost from heat demand and conversion efficiency. It is not a heating-load calculation and does not size the furnace, boiler or heat pump.
