Paver quantity is only the visible layer. A successful patio also needs controlled excavation, stable subgrade, compacted base placed in lifts, a uniform bedding layer, edge restraint and a compatible jointing system. A 420 ft² patio uses a 6 in compacted base and 1 in bedding. Base volume is 7.78 yd³ compacted; if the supplier factor requires 15% more loose volume, order about 8.95 yd³. Pavers at 10% waste require 462 ft² of package coverage.
