Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Bedding volume = paver area × compacted bedding depth × allowance. Bedding weight uses the entered density. Joint-sand bags = adjusted paver area ÷ bag coverage, rounded up.

Last reviewed: July 30, 2026
Estimate bedding and jointing sand for a brick-paver installation from paved area, compacted bedding thickness, joint volume, density and package yield. Base aggregate is calculated separately.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure the finished paved area.
- 2Calculate compacted bedding volume from the specified thickness.
- 3Add joint-sand volume using paver dimensions and joint width.
- 4Convert volume to weight or bags using supplier density and yield, then round upward.
Worked numerical example
A 600 ft² patio with a 1 in compacted bedding layer requires 50 ft³, or 1.85 yd³, before compaction and screeding loss. Joint sand is added from paver geometry and joint width.
Purchasing and rounding
Bedding and joint sand may be different products. Confirm gradation, moisture condition, bulk density and whether polymeric joint sand is compatible with the paver and joint width.
Interpret the result
The result separates bedding volume from joint fill. It does not determine base thickness, drainage or paver suitability.
Page-specific assumptions
- Finished bedding thickness is uniform.
- Paver and joint dimensions are representative.
- Density or bag yield matches the selected sand.
Common mistakes
- Using loose bedding thickness as compacted thickness without allowance.
- Using masonry sand when the system specifies another gradation.
- Combining base aggregate with bedding sand.
- Applying polymeric sand outside its joint-width or weather limits.

FAQ
Brick Paver Sand Calculator questions
Is bedding sand the same as joint sand?+
Not necessarily. Bedding and joint materials have different grading and performance requirements.
Should bedding depth be compacted depth?+
Yes. Enter the planned finished compacted thickness, then use an allowance for handling and field variation.
Why does joint-sand coverage vary?+
Joint width, paver thickness, pattern, bevels and compaction determine how much material enters the joints.
