Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Mixed volume = floor area × average depth. The allowance is applied before dividing by the entered mixed volume per bag and rounding up.

How to use this estimate in a real project

This calculator estimates self-leveling or patching compound from floor area, average installed depth and package yield. It helps order material but does not determine substrate preparation, primer, minimum lift or structural suitability.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Map high and low points instead of using one isolated depth.
  2. 2Estimate a realistic average fill depth over the treated area.
  3. 3Convert area × depth to volume.
  4. 4Add mixing allowance and divide by exact bag yield.

Worked numerical example

A 300 ft² floor averaging 1/4 in depth contains 6.25 ft³. With 12% allowance and 0.5 ft³ yield per bag, the quantity is 14 full bags.

Purchasing and rounding

Order whole bags from the same product system and include the required primer separately. Deep fills may require a different product or aggregate extension.

Interpret the result

Average depth is the most sensitive input. Doubling depth doubles material, even though floor area remains unchanged.
