Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Order area = floor area × waste factor. Sheets = round up (order area ÷ sheet area). Adhesive and fasteners are rounded to full purchasable units.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate full subfloor sheets, adhesive tubes, fasteners and material cost for a rectangular floor using sheet coverage and whole-package rounding.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure floor plan area receiving new subfloor.
  2. 2Apply waste for cuts, damaged edges and layout.
  3. 3Divide by actual sheet area and round up to whole sheets.
  4. 4Calculate adhesive and fasteners from their entered coverage/counts, then round to tubes and boxes.

Worked numerical example

A 20 ft × 15 ft floor is 300 ft². With 10% waste, plan 330 ft²; 4×8 sheets cover 32 ft² each, so the order rounds to 11 sheets. At 50 fasteners per sheet, that is 550 fasteners or three 200-count boxes.

Purchasing and rounding

Confirm panel thickness, span rating, tongue-and-groove requirements, adhesive compatibility and fastener schedule for the framing system. Sheet orientation and staggered joints affect cutting efficiency.

Interpret the result

Purchased sheet coverage will exceed floor area because full panels are rounded up. Adhesive and fastener counts are separate packaging decisions and should follow the assembly specification.
