Transparent calculation

Joist positions = round up (layout width ÷ spacing) + 1. Field stock, rim stock and blocking stock are added, then the waste allowance is rounded to full pieces.

Estimate floor-joist quantity and stock length from building width, spacing, bearing layout and rim conditions without selecting joist size or span capacity.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure framing direction and building length.
- 2Divide by on-center spacing and include both boundary members.
- 3Add doubled members, stair openings and concentrated-load framing.
- 4Round stock or engineered members to full units.
Worked numerical example
A 30 ft building length framed at 16 in on center has 22.5 spaces, so 24 joist lines are needed including both ends. Double joists and openings are added separately.
