Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net layered area = (project area − openings) × layers. Order area applies the cut allowance. Sheets = round up (order area ÷ sheet area).

Use this calculator to convert project coverage into full plywood or OSB sheets using actual sheet dimensions, layer count and cutting allowance. Panel grade, thickness and span rating remain separate selection decisions.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure net surface area.
- 2Multiply by the number of panel layers.
- 3Apply the cut and layout allowance.
- 4Divide by actual sheet area and round upward.
Worked numerical example
A 640 ft² roof with one layer and 10% waste requires 704 ft². Standard 4 ft × 8 ft sheets cover 32 ft², so the order is 22 full sheets.
Purchasing and rounding
Panels are bought as full sheets or full bundles. Keep a few matching sheets for damaged cuts and field changes, and verify actual panel dimensions and edge profile.
Interpret the result
Unused purchased area results from whole-sheet rounding and layout. Complex roofs or staggered seams normally need a higher allowance than simple rectangles.

Should openings always be deducted?+
Large openings can be deducted, but small cutouts may not reduce the sheet order because the surrounding panel still comes from a full sheet.
Why can layout require more sheets than area alone?+
Seam placement, orientation, staggering and unsupported edges can prevent every offcut from being reused.
Does this choose plywood thickness?+
No. Thickness and grade depend on span, load, exposure and the construction specification.
