Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Regular studs = round up (wall length ÷ spacing) + 1. Opening and end studs are added, then waste is applied. Plate boards = round up (wall length × plate runs ÷ stock length).

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate studs, plates and basic framing lumber from wall length, spacing, corners and openings. It supports takeoff planning but not load-bearing design, header sizing or bracing.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Divide wall length by stud spacing and include both ends.
  2. 2Add corner and intersection assemblies.
  3. 3Add opening-specific king, jack and cripple studs.
  4. 4Calculate plate layers and round all lumber to stock lengths.

Worked numerical example

A 40 ft wall at 16 in on center needs about 31 layout studs including both ends before adding corner, intersection, king, jack and cripple studs.

Purchasing and rounding

Order whole studs and plate boards by grade, species, treatment and stock length. Allow for defects and layout changes.

Interpret the result

The base on-center count is only the repeating field. Openings and intersections often account for a significant share of total studs.
