Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Planned pipe length = measured run × (1 + spare allowance). Stock lengths = round up (planned length ÷ stock length). Geometric fall = run length × slope ÷ 100.

Convert a measured drainage run into whole pipe lengths, joining count, geometric fall and an editable allowance for cuts and spares. It deliberately does not pretend that pipe length alone can size hydraulic capacity.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure the pipe centerline from inlet or collection point to the outlet.
- 2Enter the actual stock length of the selected pipe system.
- 3Apply a small cut/spare allowance and round to whole pipe lengths.
- 4Use run length times grade to check the geometric elevation fall separately from hydraulic sizing.
Worked numerical example
A 95 ft drain with 5% spare allowance requires 99.75 ft of planned pipe. Using 10 ft stock lengths, the order is 10 pieces for 100 ft total. At a 1% grade, the 95 ft centerline run drops 0.95 ft, or 11.4 in.
Purchasing and rounding
Joining method matters: bell-end, corrugated snap, solvent-weld and gasketed systems do not all need the same couplers. Count branch fittings, bends, cleanouts and outlet adapters from the actual layout.
Interpret the result
The result answers how much pipe to buy and what fall the entered grade creates. It does not establish pipe diameter, drainage capacity, bedding thickness or acceptable discharge location.
