Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Board rows = round up ((deck width + one gap) ÷ (actual board face width + installed gap)). Lineal decking = rows × deck length. Apply waste, divide by stock length and round up to whole boards.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate the number of stock deck boards required when field boards run along the entered deck length. It uses actual board face width and installed gap to determine board rows, then converts row length to whole stock pieces with a separate cut/layout allowance.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Confirm which direction the field boards run.
  2. 2Measure actual finished board face width rather than the nominal product name.
  3. 3Add the installed gap to form the row pitch and round the row count upward.
  4. 4Multiply rows by deck length, add the layout allowance and divide by stock-board length.

Worked numerical example

A 20 ft by 14 ft deck using 5.5 in actual-width boards with 1/4 in gaps needs about 30 board rows across the 14 ft width. Those rows represent 600 lineal ft before waste; with a 10% allowance and 16 ft stock, the order rounds up to 42 boards.

Purchasing and rounding

Order whole stock lengths and plan joins around joist locations. Picture-frame borders, breaker boards, stairs and diagonal fields should be measured separately because they change both lineal footage and offcut reuse.

Interpret the result

The board-row count controls coverage across the deck; the stock-board count controls purchasing. A deck can have the correct coverage but still need more pieces when available stock lengths create many joints.

Why use actual board width instead of nominal width?+

The installed face width controls how many rows fit across the deck. Nominal lumber names are not the finished face dimension.

Does this work for diagonal decking?+

Not directly. Diagonal or herringbone layouts create more offcuts and should use a larger project-specific allowance.

Should I include picture-frame border boards?+

Calculate border and breaker-board lengths separately, then add them to the order because they change the field-board layout.
