Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Courses = round up ((deck width + gap) ÷ (board face width + gap)). Excess coverage is divided between both edge boards. Purchase boards include stock-length cuts and waste.

Use this calculator to lay out deck-board count and resulting gap from deck width, actual board width and target spacing. It is a geometry tool, not a prescription for product-specific installation spacing.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Convert deck width and board width to matching units.
  2. 2Estimate board count from board-plus-gap module.
  3. 3Recalculate the exact gap using the selected whole board count.
  4. 4Check edge-board and picture-frame details separately.

Worked numerical example

Across a 12 ft deck width, 5.5 in boards with a target 0.25 in gap use a 5.75 in module. The preliminary count is about 25 boards, then the exact remaining space is redistributed across the gaps.

Purchasing and rounding

Boards are purchased as whole pieces. Board length and cut layout are handled separately from this across-width spacing calculation.

Interpret the result

The exact gap may differ slightly from the target because board count must be whole. Verify actual board width and moisture condition before layout.
