Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Base boards = (deck width + one gap) ÷ (actual board width + installed gap), rounded up. Apply waste to the full-board count.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure the deck width perpendicular to the board direction.
  2. 2Use actual board face width, not the nominal lumber designation.
  3. 3Test the intended number of board rows and calculate the remaining width.
  4. 4Distribute the remainder across the modeled gaps and compare it with product guidance and the desired appearance.

Worked numerical example

A 12 ft deck width is 144 in. If 25 rows of 5.5 in boards occupy 137.5 in, 6.5 in remains for the spaces between rows and the modeled edge condition. Dividing that remainder by the calculator’s gap positions gives the actual gap required for the selected row count; changing the row count by one can materially change the final spacing.

Purchasing and rounding

Confirm the installed board width and expansion-spacing guidance for the exact wood or composite product. Moisture content and temperature can affect required spacing, so layout arithmetic should not override manufacturer instructions.

Interpret the result

The calculated gap is the spacing needed for the selected deck width and board-row count. If it falls outside the product’s acceptable range, change the row count, board width strategy or edge treatment rather than forcing the layout.
