Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Courses = deck width ÷ (board face width + gap). Boards = courses × boards per course × cut allowance. Total cost adds board, fastener and entered area-based labor costs.

Use the Deck Board Cost Calculator to translate deck dimensions and a chosen board profile into board courses, full stock boards, fasteners, material cost and an area-based labor allowance. It is intended for comparing deck-surface scenarios, not for pricing the structural frame.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Convert board face width plus installed gap into deck-width coverage per course.
  2. 2Round the number of courses up so the full deck width is covered.
  3. 3Determine how many stock boards are needed along each course and apply the cut allowance.
  4. 4Calculate fastener packs and entered labor cost separately, then add them to material cost.

Worked numerical example

For a 16 ft × 12 ft deck using 16 ft boards that are 5.5 in wide with a 1/8 in gap, the 12 ft width needs 26 board courses. One 16 ft board completes each course, so the base takeoff is 26 boards. With 10% cut allowance the order becomes 29 boards. At $22 per board, plus three 100-fastener packs at $12 and $8/ft² labor, the calculator separates board, fastener and labor cost before showing the total.

Purchasing and rounding

Match board length, actual face width, grade/profile and fastening system to the selected product. Long stock can reduce butt joints, while picture-frame borders, diagonal layouts and breaker boards usually require a higher cut allowance than a simple straight layout.

Interpret the result

The board count is a surface takeoff, not a complete deck bill of materials. The cost result excludes joists, beams, posts, stairs, fascia, railing and demolition unless those costs are deliberately included elsewhere.
