Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Joist lines = round up (deck width ÷ spacing) + one. Each joist and rim line is converted to full stock boards, then the extra-board allowance is applied.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use the Deck Joist Quantity Calculator to convert deck width and on-center joist spacing into joist lines, then translate joist and rim lengths into purchasable stock boards and hanger quantities. It supports framing takeoff after the joist size and span have already been designed.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Divide the width across joists by the selected on-center spacing and round up the number of spaces.
  2. 2Add the closing joist line so both edges of the framed width are represented.
  3. 3Convert joist and rim lengths into full stock boards.
  4. 4Apply the extra-board allowance and calculate hangers/cost from the resulting framing quantity.

Worked numerical example

For a 16 ft joist span and 12 ft width at 16 in on center, 12 ft equals 144 in; 144 ÷ 16 = 9 spaces, so the framing model needs 10 joist lines. With 16 ft stock, each joist can use one full board before the extra-board allowance. The calculator then adds rim-board stock and hanger cost based on the entered prices.

Purchasing and rounding

Joist size, species, grade, treatment and stock length must match the structural design. Use the calculator for quantity only after span, cantilever, beam layout, blocking and connector requirements are established.

Interpret the result

The joist-line count is a spacing result; the board count is a purchasing result. They differ when joists require more than one stock board, when rim boards are included, or when an extra-board allowance is applied.
