Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Casing length = 2 × (width + height) × quantity × trimmed faces. Apply waste, divide by stock length and round up.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure trim-to-trim width and height for the intended casing path.
  2. 2Multiply perimeter by window quantity and number of trimmed faces.
  3. 3Apply cut allowance for miters, defects and matching long legs.
  4. 4Divide order length by stock length and round to whole pieces; calculate apron length separately.

Worked numerical example

Six 4 ft × 5 ft windows trimmed on one face require 108 ft of perimeter casing. With 10% waste the order length is 118.8 ft; using 8 ft stock, the purchase rounds to 15 pieces.

Purchasing and rounding

Long vertical legs may control stock length even when total footage appears sufficient. Match profile, species, finish and lot, and plan stools/aprons, rosettes or jamb extensions separately.

Interpret the result

Total casing footage and stock-piece count answer different questions. Short offcuts can reduce waste only when they are long enough and profile orientation allows reuse.
