Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Gross area = width × height × quantity. Estimated glass area applies the frame deduction. Perimeter = 2 × (width + height) × quantity.

Worked numerical example

Four windows measuring 1.2 m × 1.5 m have 7.2 m² of total glazing area before frame deductions.

Purchasing and rounding

Use the calculated glazing or opening area according to the downstream task: order windows by individual unit dimensions, not by total square area. For finishes, films or heat-loss work, keep each window's dimensions and frame deductions available because equal total area can represent very different unit sizes.

Interpret the result

The total area is useful for façade schedules, finish quantities and thermal calculations, but it does not define window count or rough-opening dimensions. Gross opening area, visible glass area and frame area are different quantities and should not be substituted without checking the purpose.

Not always. Rough openings include installation clearances and must follow the window manufacturer specification.

Why deduct frame area?+

The frame and sash occupy part of the gross rectangular opening, reducing visible glass area.

Can this determine energy performance?+

No. U-factor, solar heat gain, glazing type and installation quality determine thermal performance.
