Input and output guide

What each value means

The labels and units below are part of this calculator’s visible methodology. Replace every default with measurements or product data from the actual project.

Treated water use

Enter this project assumption in gal/day. The current imperial default is 240 gal/day.

Incoming hardness

Enter this project assumption in grains/gal. The current imperial default is 12 grains/gal.

Operating days

Enter this project assumption in days. The current imperial default is 30 days. Minimum: 1. Maximum: 366.

Hardness removal per salt unit

Enter this project assumption in grains/lb salt. The current imperial default is 4000 grains/lb salt.

Reserve and operating allowance

Enter this project assumption in %. The current imperial default is 10 %. Minimum: 0. Maximum: 50.

Salt bag weight

Enter this project assumption in lb. The current imperial default is 40 lb.

Price per salt bag

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 9.5. Minimum: 0.

How to read the outputs

Hardness load treated

water use × hardness × days. Default preview: 86,400 grains.

Base salt use

before reserve allowance. Default preview: 21.6 lb.

Purchased salt

40 lb per bag. Default preview: 40 lb.

Average daily salt

planning average. Default preview: 0.79 lb/day.

Unused purchased salt

full-bag rounding. Default preview: 16.2 lb.

Salt cost

full bags. Default preview: $9.50.

Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Hardness load = treated water × hardness × days. Divide by editable salt efficiency, add reserve allowance and round to full bags.

FAQ

Water Softener Salt Usage Calculator questions

Why does salt efficiency matter?+

Two softeners can remove the same hardness while using different salt doses. Use certified or manufacturer performance for the programmed setting.

Should untreated outdoor water be included?+

Only include water routed through the softener. Irrigation and other bypassed uses should normally be excluded.

Does this schedule regeneration cycles?+

No. It estimates average salt demand; regeneration timing depends on usable capacity and control settings.
