Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Order area = floor length × width × waste factor. Cartons = round up (order area ÷ carton coverage). Approximate plank count uses plank face area and carton coverage.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Last reviewed: July 29, 2026

Use this calculator to estimate luxury vinyl plank coverage and full cartons for a room or connected floor. It separates net area, allowance and package rounding so the purchase can be compared with the installer takeoff.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure every floor section.
  2. 2Deduct only areas that will remain permanently uncovered.
  3. 3Apply an allowance for cuts, plank staggering and defects.
  4. 4Round to full cartons using exact package coverage.

Worked numerical example

For 650 ft² with a 7% allowance, the planned coverage is 695.5 ft². At 19.4 ft² per carton, order 36 cartons for 698.4 ft².

Purchasing and rounding

Vinyl plank is ordered by full carton. Confirm dye lot, wear layer, attached pad and carton coverage before combining quantities from different products.

Interpret the result

A small remaining coverage margin is normal after carton rounding. For repairs, keeping several matching planks is often more useful than returning every unused piece.

Page-specific assumptions

  • Uniform product across the measured area.
  • Straight plank layout.
  • Accepted, flat and dry substrate.
  • Transitions and stair pieces estimated separately.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every click-lock product has the same waste rate.
  • Ignoring narrow end cuts.
  • Mixing square metres and square feet on carton labels.
  • Failing to inspect lot numbers.

FAQ

Vinyl Plank Flooring Calculator questions

Is underlayment always required below vinyl plank?+

No. Requirements vary by product, subfloor and attached backing.

Why is plank count approximate?+

Carton coverage and nominal plank dimensions may include manufacturing tolerances or mixed plank lengths.

Should spare cartons be kept?+

Keeping compatible material can help with future repairs, especially when colors or product lines change.
