This calculator converts net floor area into full laminate cartons while exposing plank coverage, cutting allowance and price. It is designed for floating-floor material planning, not subfloor acceptance or expansion-joint design.
Calculation steps
- 1Combine all connected floor areas.
- 2Subtract only large permanent areas that will not be covered.
- 3Apply a layout allowance based on room shape and plank direction.
- 4Divide by carton coverage and round upward.
Worked numerical example
A 420 ft² floor with 8% allowance requires 453.6 ft². With 23.8 ft² per carton, the purchasing quantity is 20 cartons, providing 476 ft².
Purchasing and rounding
Order whole cartons and keep unopened material within the retailer return policy. Retain spare planks from the installed lot for future repairs.
Interpret the result
Unused purchased coverage is the difference between full-carton quantity and the waste-adjusted plan. Small projects can show a high percentage because one extra carton is indivisible.
