Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Net trim = room perimeter − opening deductions + additional runs. Order length = net trim × waste factor. Stock pieces = round up (order length ÷ stock length).

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate baseboard and trim stock from room perimeter, doorway deductions, stock lengths and cut allowance. It helps plan boards and joints but does not design profiles or fastening.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure each room perimeter.
  2. 2Deduct door openings or other untrimmed edges.
  3. 3Add corner, splice and defect allowance.
  4. 4Round to full available stock lengths.

Worked numerical example

Three 12 ft × 10 ft rooms have 132 ft of combined perimeter. After 9 ft of doorway deductions, net trim is 123 ft. With 10% allowance and 16 ft boards, order 9 boards.

Purchasing and rounding

Longer stock reduces joints but can cost more and be harder to transport. Buy full boards and consider matching profile and production lot.

Interpret the result

Extra linear footage is used for miter cuts, scarf joints and defect removal. Small rooms can show high percentage waste because boards are indivisible.
