Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Net compacted fill = trench volume − pipe displacement. Loose order volume = net fill × compaction allowance. Tonnage uses entered density.

Worked numerical example

A 100 ft trench 2 ft wide and 3 ft deep has 600 ft³ gross volume; subtract bedding and pipe displacement before adding compaction allowance.

Purchasing and rounding

Order backfill from the net void remaining after pipe, conduit, bedding and other permanent materials are deducted. If buying loose aggregate or soil by volume, account for the supplier's loose-state volume and the specified compacted lift requirements rather than treating excavated and compacted volumes as identical.

Interpret the result

The result is the geometric backfill space before material-state adjustments. Excavated spoil may swell, imported fill may compact, and unsuitable excavated soil may not be reusable, so net trench volume should not automatically be treated as the truck-delivery quantity.
