Heads = round up (area ÷ coverage per head). Maximum heads per zone = usable source flow ÷ flow per head. Zones = round up (heads ÷ maximum heads per zone).

Use this calculator to estimate the number of irrigation zones from available flow and the combined flow of selected sprinkler heads. It supports preliminary grouping and does not verify pressure, pipe sizing or hydraulic balance.
Calculation steps
- 1Determine reliable available flow at operating pressure.
- 2Multiply head count by flow per head.
- 3Apply an optional reserve factor.
- 4Divide total demand by available zone flow and round up.
Worked numerical example
With 12 gpm available and 15 heads using 1.8 gpm each, total demand is 27 gpm. Dividing by 12 gives 2.25, so at least 3 zones are required before pressure allowance.
Purchasing and rounding
Valves and controller stations are purchased as whole units. Round zones upward and include spare controller capacity where practical.
Interpret the result
More zones reduce simultaneous flow but increase valves and controller requirements. Mixed precipitation-rate heads should not be grouped solely by flow.

Is square-foot coverage enough to lay out heads?+
No. Proper design uses head-to-head spacing, nozzle patterns, wind exposure and matched precipitation.
What does a negative pressure margin mean?+
The entered source pressure is below the minimum head pressure plus the entered pipe and valve loss allowance.
