Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Panel rise = panel length × sin(tilt). Shadow-clear gap = rise ÷ tan(design sun elevation). Row pitch adds panel projection and service clearance; total array depth repeats that geometry across rows.

What design sun elevation should be used?+

Choose a project-specific seasonal design condition based on site latitude, orientation and acceptable shading rather than relying on a universal value.

Does this account for terrain slope?+

No. Sloped or uneven sites change relative row elevation and shadow geometry.

Why add service clearance?+

A geometric no-shadow gap may still be too narrow for access, drainage, vegetation control or equipment maintenance.
