How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate only the clean drainage-gravel zone placed behind a retaining wall. The calculation uses the wall length, specified gravel thickness and actual average backfill height so the result can be ordered by bulk volume, weight or bags without confusing the drainage zone with the leveling pad or structural backfill.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure the wall length that actually receives drainage aggregate.
  2. 2Enter the specified gravel-zone thickness behind the wall face, not the overall excavation width.
  3. 3Use the average installed gravel height when grade varies along the wall.
  4. 4Apply only a realistic settlement/handling allowance, then convert the order volume with supplier density if ordering by weight.

Worked numerical example

For a 42 ft wall with a 12 in drainage zone and 3.5 ft average gravel height, the geometric volume is 147 ft³, or about 5.44 yd³. With an 8% settlement and handling allowance, the order volume is about 5.88 yd³ before supplier rounding.

Purchasing and rounding

Bulk aggregate is commonly sold by volume or weight. Use the supplier density for the specified clean drainage aggregate and confirm minimum delivery quantities; bag counts are mainly useful for small repairs or short wall sections.

Interpret the result

The result is the aggregate quantity for the entered drainage prism. It does not include the leveling pad, wall units, geogrid, perforated drain pipe, filter fabric or soil backfill outside that prism.
