- 4Apply one documented allowance, then divide by the exact package yield or stock length and round up only at the purchasing stage.
Worked numerical example
If 1,600 ft² of paintable surface is estimated at $0.85 per ft² for labor, the base labor estimate is $1,360 before preparation or difficult-access adjustments.
Purchasing and rounding
Use the labor rate basis that matches the estimate—per square foot, per room or another defined unit—and keep surface preparation, masking, height/access premiums and specialty coatings as explicit additions instead of hiding them in paint quantity.
Interpret the result
The result is a labor-cost scenario from the measured paintable scope and entered labor rate. It is not a material estimate, and it should be adjusted when preparation, occupied-space protection, difficult access or multiple finish systems change crew time.

No. This calculator estimates labor only; paint, primer, masking materials and equipment are separate.
Why is preparation entered as a percentage?+
Preparation varies widely. A percentage lets you scale sanding, patching, masking and protection time to project complexity.
Should primer be counted as another coat?+
Yes when primer requires a full separate application. Add it to the coat count or estimate it with the paint-primer calculator.
