Input and output guide

What each value means

The labels and units below are part of this calculator’s visible methodology. Replace every default with measurements or product data from the actual project.

Lawn area

Enter this project assumption in ft². The current imperial default is 5000 ft².

Water depth per session

Enter this project assumption in in. The current imperial default is 0.5 in.

Watering sessions per week

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 2. Minimum: 1.

Average weeks per month

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 4.33.

Application efficiency

Enter this project assumption in %. The current imperial default is 70 %. Minimum: 1. Maximum: 100.

Water price

Enter this project assumption in per 1,000 gal. The current imperial default is 9 per 1,000 gal. Minimum: 0.

Sessions per month

frequency × average weeks. Default preview: 8.7.

Annual water volume

twelve-month equivalent. Default preview: 231,362 gal.

Annual cost equivalent

monthly estimate × 12. Default preview: $2,082.26.

Application efficiency

editable system assumption. Default preview: 70%.

Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Net volume = lawn area × watering depth. Applied volume = net volume ÷ irrigation efficiency. Monthly volume = applied volume × sessions per week × weeks per month. Cost uses the entered utility rate.

FAQ

Lawn Watering Cost Calculator questions

What is application efficiency?+

It represents water lost to wind, evaporation, runoff, overspray and uneven distribution before reaching the target root zone.

Should rainfall be subtracted?+

Yes. Reduce watering depth or frequency when effective rainfall supplies part of the landscape requirement.

Why might the utility bill differ?+

Utilities may use tiered rates, fixed charges, seasonal pricing or sewer charges that are not represented by one simple water rate.
