Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Delivered heat = current energy × current efficiency. Proposed energy = delivered heat ÷ proposed efficiency. Annual savings = avoided energy cost + maintenance savings.

Calculation steps

- 3Review the unrounded engineering or usage result before applying allowances, duty cycle, efficiency or tariff assumptions.
- 4Apply each adjustment once, then round only the final purchasing, equipment-count or scheduling output.
Worked numerical example
Reducing annual heating input from 20,000 kWh to 15,000 kWh saves 5,000 kWh; at $0.16/kWh that represents about $800 per year.
Purchasing and rounding
Use comparable annual energy quantities and the marginal energy price that actually changes with consumption. Keep fixed utility charges out of savings unless the project eliminates them.
Interpret the result
Savings are the difference between the baseline and proposed scenarios. Weather, occupancy, setpoints and rebound effects must be normalized if the figures come from different periods.
