Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net area = room area − excluded area. Order area applies the waste allowance. Cartons = round up (order area ÷ carton coverage).

Use this calculator to convert net hardwood-floor area into full cartons or bundles after accounting for board-length mix, room shape and cutting allowance. It does not determine moisture acceptance, fastening or expansion details.
Calculation steps
- 1Measure every room, closet and connected area.
- 2Subtract only permanent areas that will not receive flooring.
- 3Choose allowance based on layout, grade and board-length mix.
- 4Divide by package coverage and round upward.
Worked numerical example
A 900 ft² installation with 8% allowance requires 972 ft². At 22 ft² per carton, the purchasing quantity is 45 cartons, supplying 990 ft².
Purchasing and rounding
Buy full cartons or bundles and retain material from the same lot. Random-length products can require more layout allowance than fixed-length planks.
Interpret the result
Unused purchased coverage is partly cutting stock and partly full-carton rounding. It can provide valuable attic stock for repairs.
