Input and output guide

What each value means

The labels and units below are part of this calculator’s visible methodology. Replace every default with measurements or product data from the actual project.

Roof drainage area

Enter this project assumption in ft². The current imperial default is 2400 ft².

Design rainfall intensity

Enter this project assumption in in/hr. The current imperial default is 3 in/hr.

Runoff coefficient

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 0.95. Minimum: 0.1. Maximum: 1.

Capacity per downspout

Enter this project assumption in gal/min. The current imperial default is 12 gal/min.

Capacity reserve

Enter this project assumption in %. The current imperial default is 20 %. Minimum: 0. Maximum: 100.

Gutter edge served

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 160 ft.

Installed cost per downspout

Enter this project assumption in per downspout. The current imperial default is 180 per downspout. Minimum: 0.

How to read the outputs

before reserve. Default preview: 71.08 gal/min.

Design runoff

20% reserve. Default preview: 85.3 gal/min.

Average spacing

served edge ÷ downspouts. Default preview: 20 ft.

Combined capacity

entered capacity × count. Default preview: 96 gal/min.

Runoff coefficient

Installation allowance

count × entered installed cost. Default preview: $1,440.00.

Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Roof runoff = roof area × rainfall intensity × runoff coefficient. Capacity reserve is added, then required downspouts = round up (design runoff ÷ capacity per downspout).

FAQ

Gutter Downspout Quantity Calculator questions

Where should rainfall intensity come from?+

Use project-appropriate local rainfall data or the value required by the applicable drainage design method.

Does downspout size affect the count?+

Yes. Enter the verified flow capacity for the selected outlet and downspout system.

Is equal spacing always appropriate?+

No. Roof valleys, high-flow sections, corners and drainage routing can require uneven placement.
