Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Estimated fuel rate interpolates between the entered no-load fraction and full-load fuel use. Runtime = usable tank ÷ hourly fuel rate. Output = rated kW × load percentage.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate generator fuel rate by interpolating between no-load and full-load fuel use, then calculate tank runtime, daily fuel and operating cost.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Enter rated electrical output and realistic average load percentage.
  2. 2Use manufacturer full-load fuel consumption for the fuel and generator model.
  3. 3Estimate no-load consumption as the entered fraction and interpolate to average load.
  4. 4Divide usable tank fuel by hourly consumption and price daily fuel separately.

Worked numerical example

A 10 kW generator at 50% load with 1.0 gal/h full-load use and a 30% no-load fraction is estimated at 0.65 gal/h. An 8 gal usable tank then provides about 12.3 hours of theoretical runtime; running 8 hours uses about 5.2 gal.

Purchasing and rounding

Use the generator manufacturer’s fuel-consumption table when available; this interpolation is for planning between known points. Confirm usable tank capacity, fuel type and safe refueling/storage requirements.

Interpret the result

Fuel consumption does not scale perfectly with electrical load. The result is an editable planning curve, not a substitute for the model-specific fuel table.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming half load always uses exactly half the fuel.

Why does a generator still use fuel at low load?+

The engine must continue running and overcoming internal losses even when electrical demand is small.

Is fuel consumption linear with load?+

Not exactly. The interpolation is a planning estimate; manufacturer load-curve data is more accurate.

Can this calculate safe generator size?+

No. Starting loads, transfer equipment, grounding and installation require qualified electrical planning.
