Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Energy = watts × quantity × hours ÷ 1,000. Running and standby energy are added, then multiplied by billing days and electricity price.

How to use this estimate in a real project

This calculator estimates electricity use and operating cost from appliance power, runtime, frequency and utility rate. It is most accurate when power is measured or taken from the appliance energy label rather than guessed.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Convert watts to kilowatts.
  2. 2Multiply by actual operating hours.
  3. 3Apply days or cycles in the selected period.
  4. 4Multiply kWh by the full energy rate.

Worked numerical example

A 1,500 W appliance used 2 hours per day consumes 3 kWh daily. At $0.18 per kWh, the estimated cost is $0.54 per day or about $16.20 per 30-day month.

Purchasing and rounding

The result is an operating-cost scenario, not a purchase quantity. Use it to compare appliances with different power and usage patterns.

Interpret the result

Rated watts can overstate variable-load devices and understate standby use. A plug-in meter provides better real-world input for many appliances.

Page-specific assumptions

  • Entered power represents average operating draw.
  • Runtime excludes periods when the appliance is off unless standby is included.
  • Energy rate is expressed per kWh.
  • Demand charges are not included.

No. It estimates energy charges only, not utility fixed fees, time-of-use rates or commercial demand charges.
