What each value means

The labels and units below are part of this calculator’s visible methodology. Replace every default with measurements or product data from the actual project.

Wall length

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 24 ft.

Wall height

Enter this project assumption in ft. The current imperial default is 8 ft.

Finished wall sides

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 2. Minimum: 1. Maximum: 2.

Drywall layers per side

Enter this project assumption in a unitless value. The current imperial default is 2. Minimum: 1. Maximum: 4.

Openings per finished side

Enter this project assumption in ft². The current imperial default is 21 ft². Minimum: 0.

Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Drywall area = net wall area × finished sides × layers. Channel rows derive from wall height and spacing. Sealant models perimeter and sheet seams.

FAQ

Drywall Soundproofing Calculator questions

Does adding more drywall always improve sound control?+

Additional mass can help, but decoupling, cavity absorption, airtightness and flanking paths are also important.

Are resilient channel and isolation clips interchangeable?+

No. They are different systems with different layouts and tested assemblies.

Why is acoustic sealant included?+

Air gaps and unsealed edges can significantly reduce the performance of an otherwise well-built assembly.
