Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Board rows = deck width ÷ installed board width. Joist lines = deck length ÷ joist spacing plus the end support. Screws = rows × joist lines × screws per intersection, with extra allowance and package rounding.

Estimate deck-board fastener quantity from board count, joist crossings and fasteners used at each crossing.
Calculation steps
- 1Determine how many deck boards are installed.
- 2Count the joist crossings per board in the actual layout.
- 3Multiply boards by crossings and fasteners per crossing.
- 4Add only a practical fastener-loss allowance, then round to the box quantity sold.
Worked numerical example
If 32 deck boards cross 11 joists and each board uses two screws at every joist, the field requires 32 × 11 × 2 = 704 screws before adding a small allowance for dropped or damaged fasteners.
Purchasing and rounding
Use screws approved for the decking material, framing material and exposure condition. Convert the calculated count to actual box quantities; do not substitute an incompatible coating or diameter merely because the package count is convenient.
Interpret the result
The result is field fasteners for board-to-joist attachment. It does not automatically include fascia screws, hidden-fastener clips, stair fasteners, blocking or structural connectors.
