Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Exposed edge = rectangular perimeter − hidden-edge deduction. Required fascia = exposed edge × courses. Full boards and fastener packs are rounded up after the allowance.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate deck fascia board length and purchasable stock from the exposed rim/perimeter runs that will actually receive fascia.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure only the rim-joist edges that will receive fascia.
  2. 2Add the individual fascia runs to obtain net linear footage.
  3. 3Compare each run with available board lengths so long visible runs can minimize joints.
  4. 4Round to whole boards only after the cut layout is checked.

Worked numerical example

A rectangular deck with 18 ft and 12 ft exposed fascia runs on three sides has 42 linear ft of fascia. Using 12 ft boards requires four boards (48 ft) before any extra allowance for damaged ends or non-reusable offcuts.

Purchasing and rounding

Choose fascia boards by actual stock length, thickness and material compatible with the deck system. Plan long visible runs first; an offcut that is too short for the next rim section should not be counted as usable stock.

Interpret the result

The net result is exposed fascia length, while the purchase count reflects the available board lengths and cut plan. Corners, stairs, picture-frame details and doubled fascia can add runs that are not represented by the basic perimeter.
