Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Railing spans = round up (net railing length ÷ maximum post spacing). Posts = spans + 1. Rails and balusters are rounded from stock length and entered spacing.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Estimate posts, stock rail sections, balusters and material cost for the net guard length after stair or gate openings are removed.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure only sections that will receive guard or railing.
  2. 2Subtract stair and gate openings before dividing the run into post spans.
  3. 3Round post spans up so no span exceeds the entered maximum.
  4. 4Calculate rail stock and balusters separately because their stock length and spacing rules differ.

Worked numerical example

A 48 ft railing run with a 4 ft opening leaves 44 ft. At a 6 ft maximum post spacing the run needs 8 spans and 9 posts. With 4.5 in baluster centers, the calculator then estimates the baluster count across those spans before adding the entered hardware allowance.

Purchasing and rounding

Verify the railing system’s approved post spacing, rail lengths, baluster dimensions, brackets and attachment hardware. Stair rails and graspable handrails need separate takeoffs.

Interpret the result

The post count comes from span geometry, while rail and baluster quantities come from different stock/spacing rules. Material cost is therefore not proportional to railing length alone.
