Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

For each equal clear section, baluster count is the smallest whole number that keeps the modeled end and intermediate gaps at or below the entered maximum. Waste is added before rounding to full boxes.

Use the Deck Baluster Calculator to determine how many balusters fit between deck posts while keeping the modeled clear openings at or below the entered maximum. It is a railing-layout and purchasing tool: section length, baluster face width and allowed clear gap all change the count.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Divide only genuinely equal post-to-post openings into sections.
  2. 2Convert baluster width and target clear gap into the same length unit as each section.
  3. 3Choose the smallest whole baluster count that keeps all modeled gaps at or below the target.
  4. 4Apply the spare allowance to the base piece count, then round to full boxes.

Worked numerical example

Six equal railing sections total 48 ft, so each clear section is 8 ft. With 1.5 in balusters and a 3.75 in maximum clear gap, the layout requires 19 balusters per section, or 114 before spares. An 8% spare allowance raises the order target to 124 balusters. With 20 per box, buy 7 boxes (140 balusters); the calculator also reports the actual modeled clear gap.

Purchasing and rounding

Purchase by the exact baluster profile and box quantity. Do not substitute nominal width for measured face width, and keep enough matching pieces for damaged parts or later repair because color and profile can vary by production run.

Interpret the result

The base count is the layout requirement; the order count adds spares; the box count is the actual purchase. The modeled gap is a geometry result, not a code approval—stairs, guards and special openings may have different requirements.
