Methodology

Transparent calculation

BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.

Net fence run = total length − openings. Layout pickets = round up ((run + gap) ÷ (picket width + gap)). Waste and fastener packages are then rounded up.

How to use this estimate in a real project

Use this calculator to estimate fence pickets from clear run length, picket width, target gap, section count and spare allowance. It supports material takeoff but does not determine post spacing or wind resistance.

Calculation steps

  1. 1Measure clear fence length between posts.
  2. 2Add picket width and intended gap to form the module.
  3. 3Divide each section by the module and check end spacing.
  4. 4Add spare allowance and round to bundles if applicable.

Worked numerical example

A 48 ft clear fence run using 3.5 in pickets with 0.5 in gaps has a 4 in module. Converting 48 ft to 576 in gives 144 modules, so plan about 144 pickets before allowance and end-gap adjustment.

Purchasing and rounding

Pickets are purchased as whole pieces or bundles. Order extra matching pieces for splits, grade defects and future repairs.

Interpret the result

Actual end gaps may be slightly adjusted to distribute spacing evenly across each post-to-post section.
