Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net fence run = total length − openings. Layout pickets = round up ((run + gap) ÷ (picket width + gap)). Waste and fastener packages are then rounded up.

Why add the gap to the numerator?+
A run with multiple pickets has one fewer gap than pickets. Adding one gap produces the correct repeated-module count.
Should pickets touch the ground?+
Usually a clearance is left to reduce moisture damage, but the correct clearance depends on the material and site.
