Methodology
Transparent calculation
BuildMeter converts every input to a consistent internal unit, applies the selected allowance, and rounds products up to whole purchasable units.
Net fence run = total length − openings. Layout pickets = round up ((run + gap) ÷ (picket width + gap)). Waste and fastener packages are then rounded up.

Calculation steps
- 1Measure clear fence length between posts.
- 2Add picket width and intended gap to form the module.
- 3Divide each section by the module and check end spacing.
- 4Add spare allowance and round to bundles if applicable.
Worked numerical example
A 48 ft clear fence run using 3.5 in pickets with 0.5 in gaps has a 4 in module. Converting 48 ft to 576 in gives 144 modules, so plan about 144 pickets before allowance and end-gap adjustment.
