Worked numerical example

A 14 ft × 12 ft room has a 52 ft perimeter; with 12 ft stock and 10% allowance, order 5 pieces.

Purchasing and rounding

Plan molding by wall run and available stock length so long visible walls can receive the fewest joints. Round each run to purchasable pieces rather than dividing only the total perimeter, because offcuts from one wall may be too short or have the wrong miter orientation for another.

Interpret the result

The perimeter establishes the minimum linear footage, but the practical purchase count is driven by stock length, corner cuts, scarf joints and pattern matching. A room can therefore require more molding than a simple total-length division suggests.
